Comments about Pomeranian

Originally a much larger dog used for herding, this breed was first noticed in Pomerania—hence its name. It is considered a member of the Spitz family, a group of Northern sled dogs that includes the Samoyed, the Norwegian Elkhound, the Chow Chow, and other Arctic breeds. In England, through careful breeding, the Pumeranian was reduced in size from a huge 30-pound working breed to the diminutive 4- or 5- pound toy affectionately called the Pom. Recognized in America in 1900, the breed has since undergone further size reduction.

Pomeranian Potential Health Problems

Fairly healthy toy. Susceptible to tooth decay, tooth loss at early age, and gum disorders. May get tear stains under eyes or have inadequate tear production. Prone to skin hormonal disorders. Soft spot on skull may fail to close. Low blood sugar, epilepsy, progressive retinal atrophy, tracheal collapse, and congenital heart disease possible.

Care and Exercise for the Pomeranian

Daily brushing is essential to maintain thick, bushy coat, particularly in summer when shedding. Avoid bathing because it destroys the coat; it is essential to blow-dry after bathing. Lightly sprinkle baby powder into the coat and dampen lightly with water from an atomizer while brushing. Requires weekly dental care to prevent mouth disorders. Wash eyes daily. Minimal exercise required. With patience, can be easily trained.
